Working out with Shapewear: Do's and Don'ts? We Test it Out

Shapewear is often associated with stylish dresses, tight trousers, and occasions where you need that little bit of extra confidence. But what if you also want to wear your shapewear while exercising? Is that comfortable? Does it even work? And is it healthy?

We at Shape Tape have tried it out for you. In this blog, we share the do's and don'ts of exercising with shapewear, so you know exactly when it's smart to wear it — and when not.

Why wear shapewear during exercise?

It might sound contradictory, but some people actually feel more confident when exercising with shapewear. Think of a high-waisted short that supports your tummy during yoga, or shaping leggings that make everything feel a bit firmer during a brisk walk. Especially after a pregnancy or while building up fitness, shapewear can provide a sense of extra support.

Shapewear is designed to shape and smooth, and some modern shapewear is so comfortable that it almost feels like activewear. But be careful: this is not true for all types of shapewear.

Do: Choose breathable and flexible materials

The first golden rule? Your shapewear must breathe. During exercise, your body sweats and moves, so you want material that wicks away moisture and stretches with every movement.

Our collection of shapewear includes several options made from breathable fabrics such as microfiber or spandex blends. These are light, flexible, and don't feel stuffy.

This way, you can wear shapewear without feeling constricted — even during light sports activities like walking, stretching, or Pilates.

Don't: Wear shapewear during intensive workouts

For high-impact workouts such as running, HIIT, or strength training, shapewear is usually not a good idea. Why?

  • It restricts your freedom of movement

  • You can overheat

  • It hinders good blood circulation

  • The compression can become uncomfortable after a long time

Instead, it's better to choose actual activewear with built-in support, such as sports leggings with a shaping effect or a sports bra with a firm band.

So, shapewear is fine for light exertion, but not a substitute for activewear when you're really breaking a sweat.

Do: Wear shapewear for low-impact activities

Do you want to look sleek and confident during a yoga class, a gentle workout session, or a walk in the park? Then light shapewear is an excellent choice.

Many women, for example, wear high-waisted shorts under their sports trousers or leggings for extra firmness around the tummy and waist. Shaping tank tops are also popular for creating a smooth, firm look under a loose sports shirt.

An additional benefit: shapewear helps prevent thigh chafing and often provides extra support for the lower back — something many people benefit from during prolonged standing or movement.

Don't: Wear shapewear that pinches or chafes

If your shapewear is too tight, you'll immediately notice it during exercise. It restricts your breathing, can chafe the skin, and even cause bruises if worn for extended periods during movement.

So pay close attention to the size. Shapewear should fit snugly, but not so tightly that you feel like you can't breathe or move freely. If in doubt, choose a size larger, especially if you're wearing it during an activity.

At Shape Tape, you can easily determine your size using our size chart — this way, you can be sure that your shapewear remains comfortable, even when moving.

Do: Pay attention to hygiene and care

After exercising, you sweat — naturally. And that means your shapewear needs to be washed more often. Therefore, choose models that can be easily hand-washed or machine-washed in a laundry bag at 30 degrees. Use a mild detergent and air dry it, preferably flat or hanging with the correct shape.

Our shapewear is made from durable materials that retain their shape and elasticity, even after multiple washes. This way, you can wear your favourite piece time and again, even on active days.

Conclusion

You can certainly wear shapewear during exercise — provided you choose the right model and type of activity. For gentle workouts or if you need a little extra support, it's a great solution. But for intense movement, breathable activewear is really the better choice.

At Shape Tape, you'll find a wide selection of shapewear that not only shapes beautifully but also feels comfortable. Our models are designed to support you in your own way — at a party, at work, and while moving.
